After students complete the creation, they will be emailing the production.

How to delete project you no longer want?

On the Explain Everything home screen, if you press a project thumbnail and hold it for 2-3 seconds, the delete ‘x’ button should be revealed allowing you to delete projects.

I can’t import PDF’s from Dropbox to existing project

You can create new project using PDF’s. This way PDF’s pages will be converted to presentation slides. When editing presentation you can insert images to your slides using INSERT button. We currently only support being able to insert PDF or PPT when starting a new project. We plan to include the ability to add documents into existing projects very soon. In the meantime, you can try to export your PPT files or PDF’s as images and then keep them in Dropbox in order to add to existing projects.

I cannot seem to delete and re-record a slide if I make a mistake(s)

To redo a recording on a particular slide, press the rewind button to go to the beginning and then press record. The new recording will automatically overwrite the existing recording.

How to export slides as a PDF and then open it up in reader apps like GoodReader or Annotate?

While in your project press “Export Image” (forth icon on bottom-left corner) and then choose “PDF to Email”. This will create a PDF out of all your slides and send it via email or save to Evernote/Dropbox.

YouTube issue; when exporting movie I cannot log in

Try logging in with your YouTube channel name (not your google account email address).
You can find your YouTube channel name when you log into YouTube account on your laptop and look in the upper right. If you haven’t designated a channel name before – you might have to.

The eraser or does it not work once you have selected another tool

For the drawing tool, by default when you ‘finish’ a drawing by selecting another tool it turns it into an ‘object.’ This means that you can move, resize, and rotate the drawing but you cannot erase portions of that drawing. To delete the drawing object you have to use the ‘Delete’ button.

I realized that my project is too long to send to YouTube. I would like to duplicate the entire project so I can delete slides and create two smaller movies.

Please open the project and save it under a different name (you can always change it when in the “save project” popup). Then you will have 2 copies of your project – you can delete single slides from a project by going into the slide sorter and pressing for a longer time on a slide. Then an ‘X’ will appear. Pressing it will delete your slide.

I have some professors who have sent their presentation and their voice file to me. I wanted to make a video of that presentation using their voiceover. Is there a way that I can import audio from those files and use it in the presentation?

You have 2 options – one while using just the iPad (and something that can play the WAV files, like an MP3 player or a PC computer with soundspeaker), and a second one using a video editor like iMovie.

This is the flow for the 1st option. Results should be ‘good enough’.
1) import the PPT file to Explain Everything. You may do this via Dropbox. New project -> import from Dropbox. This will create a sequence of slides in Explain Everything.
2) move the MP3 player with speaker (or the PC’s soundspeaker) close to the iPad’s microphone (at the top, just above the front video camera, but on the back plate)
3) start plying the WAV and recording in Explain Everything. Switch the slides so that they match audio from the WAV.
4) export the resulting XPL presentation to MP4 (Export -> movie to Photo Roll / or to YouTube).

Flow for second option (results can look ‘professional’).
1) import the PPT to EE just as point 1 in option 1.
2) start recording, and play the WAV at the same time. When the audio tells about another slide, switch to new slide.
3) export the resulting XPL presentation to MP4 (Export -> movie to Photo Roll).
4) import the MP4 to iMovie. Import the WAV file. It should be mostly synchronized – if not, adjust the few seconds difference editing the WAV.
5) export the iMovie project to MP4.

How to play the Explain Everything presentation on a TV?

There are 2 ways of playing the recorded presentation on a TV:
1) attach the TV cable and play the recorded presentation within Explain Everything – it will show up on the TV in exactly the same way as on your screen
2) export the presentation to an MP4 video file (to photo library) and then play it from the iPad photo library.

Evernote login: My iPad says bad login when I try to import a file

On the Home Screen go to Preferences and toggle the Evernote Login switch On and then Off again.
You will get a chance to re-enter your Evernote credentials and hopefully it will work.
You should also try using your full email address as your username if your regular username is not working.

I need to be able to talk into my iPad but it seems very muted. What am I doing wrong? It there a setting that I need to set?

The microphone is located at the top center of your iPad. you can check ti see if there is any debris in the microphone hole. You can also try using another app that records audio and see if it is muted there as well. If so, the problem is with your microphone and not the app. What to do then? Please go to the Genius Bar in the nearest Apple Store to check your iPad.

I can’t view the videos from Explain Everything using a PC with I.E. it launches the videos in Quicktime and I get a question mark that pops up in Quicktime, and the video will not run.

Try to update to the newest version of Quicktime player using I.E.: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download
Restart your browser and see if it plays ok.

Great article from The Chronicle on iPad usage in education:

Quotes:

“Nearly two years after its initial release, the iPad has become a technological staple in the world of higher education. Many posters have reviewed the potential academic uses of the device, but some of the iPad’s more educational possibilities have been overshadowed by its popularity for entertainment and personal uses. Still, some well-known applications such as Dropbox, Diigo, Instapaper, and WordPress lend themselves nicely to academic tasks. One academic task the iPad lends itself towards is screencasting.”

“In practice, we found Explain Everything to be more useful to our teaching than Educreations. While the simple screencasts of Educreations are fun to create, truly effective delivery of content such as screencasts depend on flexibility, and that means owning the video output directly. Since Educreations hosts videos only on its own site and only provides various linking and embedding options, neither students nor teachers can download them. Explain Everything offers full ownership and possession of the videos hosted at YouTube, or in MP4 format when downloaded from DropBox, a capability that provides comfort in a world where technology companies can disappear overnight.”

See the review of Explain Everything by John-Mark Ikeda

“Using iPad’s in the classroom opens many new and exciting opportunities. They are portable, easy to use and there are a wealth of apps. One of the challenges that we have encountered though, was finding an app that would allow faculty to not only present Powerpoint files, but annotate them during class. To our excitement, Explain Everything appears to fit that need.”

Conclusions:

“Good: Display and annotate PPT and PDF files. Record audio and video of presentation. Files can be opened via DropBox, Email, Evernote. Presentation videos can be exported in bSpace friendly format, uploaded to youtube or saved as PDF. Annotation tools include, arrows, lines and shapes, written and typed text and a laser pointer. One of the few apps that converts PPT files and provides an easy way to annotate, save and share your presentations

Bad: User Interface can be a little confusing. Video files are not viewable in the app. Writing is decent, but not as good as programs like Pen Ultimate. Videos take a while to export and cannot be done in the background.”

FAQ:

Question: How can I change the default color (blue) of my calendar entries?
Answer: Tap on the gear icon (top left corner), select “Colors & Visibility” and choose your colors.

Question: I can’t edit my event, why?
Answer: Events that come from a server as an invitation cannot be edited. This behavior is consistent with iPhone default calendar, we’re not limiting your options here. What you can do is delete an event from view – to do that please open list view, swipe your event and press Delete.

Question: Why can’t I invite people to an existing event?
Answer: iOS has very limited capability when it comes to invitations. We’re struggling to find a consistent way of making invitations work, but be sure that we are working on this issue for future releases, indeed it’s on the top of our list of priorities.

Question: How can I hide some of my calendars from view?
Answer: Tap on the gear icon (top left corner), select “Colors & Visibility” and select / deselect your calendars

When creating events, Organizer+ tries to recognize your activity (such as meeting, call, drive or flight) and presents it as an icon. Also, activities have a duration attribute. Duration for the predefined activities has been set and is used by default (but you can change any of them) ie telephone call ~ 15 minutes, meeting ~ 60 minutes, so there’s no need to set an end time.

Organizer+ is equipped with a predefined set of activities, but there is no limit to using activity icons. You can create new activities and attach your own icons. This can be done in preferences (accessible under “gear” icon).

Defined activities will be recognized during new event creation. For example: define soccer as an activity that lasts 90 mins. Next time you creat an event – write “tomorrow 10:00 AM soccer with Paul” – Organizer+ will instantly recognize and add the end time 90 mins later, 11:30 AM soccer with Paul”.

Organizer+ automatically synchronizes with all defined calendars on your iPhone and therefore events in Organizer+ are all your calendar entries, but enhanced with underlying links to your iPhone resources (such as people in your Address Book, co~ordinates from GoogleMaps etc). When you receive an event from an outside source, say Exchange Server, Organizer+ will display it ‘as it is’ and will not force any icons or such. But such events can be edited and while doing so – Organizer+ will try to resolve, from the event name – associated people from your Address Book and from its location attribute – an address that will be linked to GoogleMaps.

You can change an event date by tapping its date icon (or changing it’s description and allowing Organizer+ to resolve the start and end time from the description).

Events can have alerts, that will inform you in advance about it’s occurrence – but since the majority of your events will come from iPhone calendars – alert may link to it instead of to Organizer+. For all events created in Organizer+ the alert window will link to event details in Organizer+.

Tasks in Organizer+ are used as events without a given date. So for instance; a task can remind you to buy a book at a given shop or pick up laundry on your way home (both of these tasks are not time specific) but sometimes it’s necessary to place your task in your calendar as an event. In order to do this in Organizer+ press & hold your task, then choose “Move to events”.

Your task will appear on the top bar allowing you to change view to LIST/DAY/MONTH, then point to the place where it should be positioned. Use Day view and tap to indicate the starting hour of your new event, or list/month for any other event and decide when your moved task should begin, before or after existing appointments.

Remember: when creating tasks you can choose which calendar they should belong to. This way your task will have a color assigned from the calendar it’s referring to. Once moved – it will be synchronized with the appropriate calendar.

Organizer + is a fully integrated calendar bundled together with GPS-enabled task manager. It’s a tool not a toy.
Why use Organizer + instead of a standard calendar? What are its highlights? Read 10 reasons how Organizer+ can truly save time while managing your day:

It’s time saving: Set your tasks or events instantly – describe them and Organizer + will resolve crucial information such as date, time, person involved or location directly from the content of your description. No windows, no pop-ups, just unbeatable performance for those that treasure their time. Learn more about instant event creation by clicking here.

Your daily agenda in the blink of an eye: Key event information is displayed with icons. No need to read event descriptions to get an understanding of your day. Get it much faster by looking at Organizer+ with a visual representation. Learn more about how Organizer + displays day view here, and here on how list view and month view is organized.

Event locations are geolocations: Event locations are linked to GoogleMaps, so with just one tap you can find directions without losing time cutting and pasting information. To set geolocation just type in the address and you’re done. Learn more about it here.

Task lists can be arranged by priority or your distance from them. If you keep forgetting to pick up your laundry or buy wine at your favorite shop – set it as a task with a location. By checking your current location Organizer + will sort your tasks by their distance from you, instantly showing you which task can be accomplished while you’re near its place. Read about it here.

Display ongoing and nearest events in blink of an eye. No need to browse your calendar to find the current event – tap on “Today” regardless of the view you’re using and Organizer+ will highlight in red ongoing or upcoming events. Read about it here.

Invitees are linked to your Address Book: People you meet or talk to are automatically interlinked with your iPhone address book so whenever you’re in a rush – initiate a call or send a message directly from Organizer+, with just one tap on their icon! Read about it here.

Manage tasks with relation to calendars. When creating a task Organizer +associates it with a calendar, so when you add a time of occurrence to a given task – it will know to which calendar your new event should belong. Relocate tasks by moving them into your calendar to create events. You can literally drag your tasks and drop them in your calendar – read more about it here.

Time-conscious calendar entries: Activities, presented by icons are time-conscious. Organizer + knows that if it’s a call you need to make – usually it takes up to 15 minutes so, just set the start time and you’re done. See more about this feature here.

User-customizable: Organizer + comes with a set of predefined, recognizable activities. It also allows you to define user-specific ones, so if you want to teach your child how to organize the day; set their appropriate activities (school, bike, homework etc) and make them recognize time flow and responsibilities during the day, but in an intuitive and illustrated way. Read more about it here.

Organizer+ works on top of iPhone calendars: No manual synchronization is needed (synchronization with iPhone calendars is automatic and shown by a spinning gear on the preferences icon). Therefore, using Organizer + with existing iPhone calendars enhances your capabilities (all existing calendar entries are visible within Organizer + and can be differentiated by color). Read more about it here.
